The Transition Cycle Part 2 : Cocooning

Cocooning is a huge part of any transition cycle. When we experience endings, there is the initial shock, anger and denial. Then, as we begin to come to terms with what has ended, we naturally face inwards. Cocooning is a time of renewal and transformation. We need time to accept that our old familiar world has fallen away and the new one isn't here yet.
How can we cultivate our relationship with cocooning?
We all have an 'inner sanctuary' we retreat to. In this phase, we may need to be there more often. It's a safe space to heal and renew if we allow it.
We learn to nurture ourselves in ways that we may not have done before. It's an opportunity to pay close attention to our needs, to sit with our emotions and tkae time out to self-reflect.
Cocooning is an "in-between" space where nothing is certain. We all resist places that make us feel uncomfortable. Grief will probably come to the surface to be faced. Slowly, a sense of relief and release happens. This could be linked to the past relationship, home, career or role.
Activities that can be helpful during the cocooning phase include journalling, taking up something new, travelling or taking a sabbatical.
Recognise that you may not feel like doing much for a few weeks or months. Know that it's easy to get caught up in old patterns of self-judgement and to feel less confident. Cultivating patience and trust in the process is key.
Eventually, there is a turning point. You experience some feelings of excitement and more energy and your life starts to regain a sense of purpose. Trust that this will happen, like the butterfly, when you are ready.
"The struggle to leave the cocoon is what strengthens the butterfly's wings so she can fly"
Tricia Stirling
Here are my tips for navigating the cocooning phase:-
Cultivate kindness and patience towards yourself
Write about the difficult feelings that come up
Don't force things, Allow them to emerge
Create ways to have positive solitude.
Connect to your inner sanctuary daily e.g. through breathwork or meditation
Take time out in nature daily
